On Friday September 1st we are going to be decorating our writers notebooks in class. Your child may bring in supplies to do this. These are few things to keep in mind when thinking about decorating your notebook.
The notebook should symbolize you! It should reflect what your likes are and what is most important to you! Think about pasting or taping the following: o photographs of you, your family and friends o pictures from a family vacation o your sports team o cut outs from magazines that represent you such as a picture of a soccer ball or your favorite doll o You may draw the pictures yourself and color them in and then tape them on your notebook. You may also add words and phrases to describe you and your pictures. Below are a few examples of what your notebook might look like. On Monday August 21st, 2017 your child is welcome to bring a beach towel to sit on outside while we watch the solar eclipse! They do not have to bring a towel but the grass can be itchy and a towel can be more comfortable.
I hope everyone has a tremendous weekend! Ms. Kurtz Hello,
I hope your day is going well! I just want to make you aware of a few things that will be going home tonight in the Boomerang Folder! There is a Solar Eclipse Viewing Permission Form. On Monday we will be learning about what a solar eclipse is and then we will be going outside to view the solar eclipse with special glasses the school has purchased! Please sign the permission form stating if you want your child to view the eclipse outside or if you would rather have them stay inside and watch a live stream video of the eclipse. We will be going over very specific directions on the importance of keeping your glasses on to protect your eyes. There is a "About Me" brown paper bag with an information sheet. On Monday your child will have the opportunity to tell the class a little about them with the three things they put in their About Me bag. Lastly there is a Parent Homework Letter - No one knows your child better than you do. As a parent, your perception of my student is a valuable resource. The more I know and understand about your child, the more effective I can be as a teacher. Sometime in the next few weeks I would greatly appreciate your participation in writing me a letter introducing your child to me. There is more information about the letter in your child's Boomerang Folder. Please let me know if you have any questions. It is going to be an amazing school year filled with excitement and growth! Ms. Kurtz Dear Families and Friends,
I am writing to inform you of an exciting change that will be taking place in our classroom this year. We will be incorporating flexible (or alternative) seating. This means that when students are working, they will have freedom to find comfortable spaces around the room to work. They might be kneeling, standing, sitting at a desk with an exercise ball or stool. There are many possibilities of what this can look like in a classroom. Research shows that students are able to focus and do their best work when they are comfortable. Classrooms across the nation are changing the way student workplaces look, for the better! Please join and support us in helping make our classrooms a successful learning space for every child. Thank you so much for your support! Sincerely, Mackenzie Kurtz I'm so excited to see you tonight! Please make sure you stop by each table and grab or fill out the necessary papers!

The state of Missouri has adopted new Missouri Learning Standards that will begin to be implemented this school year. The standards are aligned with the national Next Generation Science Standards. There will be a significant shift in instructional methods and learning as we implement the new standards. This will be our transition year, so you will see a combination of what we have done in the past as well as what we will be moving towards. One of the biggest differences you will see is that the focus of science instruction will be shifting from memorizing facts and content for a test and now be focused on the practices of science and the ability to solve problems and communicate about science. This is an exciting change for our children, but it will take time to implement. Please read about the changes and the new standards in the documents below.
There have been some district changes this year regarding the food parents are allowed to bring in for student celebrations such as birthdays. We can no longer bring in home made foods. This is for a multiple of reasons including allergies and being mindful of the healthy things our children eat. You are still allowed to bring in food if you chose to on birthdays it just needs to be store bought and considered healthy.
